August 2005

Each month I go through the most recent e-mails I've received and pick a few to share with you.  I try to personally respond to every e-mail I receive, but I also post a few here in my Q&A column.

I, too, am a fan of The Dukes of Hazzard TV show.  I went last Sunday to watch the movie.  I liked it a lot.  I also collect die-cast cars, mostly Johnny Lightning.  I like the cars with the rubber tires.  You could interchange the tires and rims on them.  I live here in Ohio.  5 years ago I went to Cleveland for the Autorama and was looking for Dukes of Hazzard die-cast.  I found Boss Hogg's Caddy still in the package from 1981 I've had for almost 10 years.  I see Johnny Lightning did a General Lee car but could never see where it was at.  I wish they could do the whole set, like the Bluesmoblie '74 Dodge Monaco could be Rosco and Enos' car and  a lot of others.  Well, enjoy your collection.

I'm glad you liked the movie.  If you read my review, then you know I liked it as well.  But it sure has been getting trashed by critics.  It's the moviegoers, however, that will decide if this movie becomes a box office hit.  ERTL/RC2 has cranked out a ton of Dukes of Hazzard die-cast over the past few years, but Johnny Lightning's cars, though not perfect, are the ones you want to add to your collection.  Unfortunately, Hollywood on Wheels 6 has been near IMPOSSIBLE to find at retail stores.  If you want these cars, you'll have to shop online, unless they start showing up on clearance at stores like KayBee.  And I agree with you.  I think an entire line of Dukes cars from the TV show and movie would be a smart move for Johnny Lightning.

Hello, My name is Kei. I live in Japan.   I found your web site three months ago, and I was very excited because I've been collecting 1:64 movie die-cast cars! Your site is very great! I could see many of them that I've never found in Japan.

And now, I know that you need information about Charawheels #37. As far as I know, #37 was planned to be the Interceptor from "MAD MAX (The Road Warrior)" but it was dropped because of license problem.  Japanese toy collectors have been waiting it to be released even now. But we know it's hopeless.

Best regards.
From Kei Hirayama (Japan)

I've gotten a few e-mails regarding the missing #37 from the Charawheels line.  The Mad Max V8 Interceptor would've been awesome, if indeed it was planned for this line.  I've been told that Johnny Lightning went after this license, but it's tied up by some other company.  Hopefully, some day we'll see this car in 1:64 scale.  Until then, you'll have to customize your own like I did:

Here are some other e-mails I received regarding Charawheels:

Hi Joe,

Stumbled onto your great website about a week ago. I found it very nice & comprehensive. I hope to send you a pix sometime of my meager Batman collection.

Anyway, I know that a lot of companies will assign a model number to an item based on the last digits of the UPC code. I do not know if the Charawheels collection follows this, but I did receive the 4 piece Batman set today & the UPC number is 4543112229137. Maybe you can check some other UPC's & see if this is the missing link ??

Anyway, thank you for your time & I look forward to more Hollywood news.

Regards,
Steve Sylvia

Hi Joe, CW37 was not released yet. Another good resource for you is:

I hope it helps.

Best regards, Paulo.

Could the Charawheels CW37 be the other car from Knight Rider, the Knight 2000 K.A.R.R.?  It is not on the new site that you listed.  I checked the bottom of my car K.A.R.R., but it doesn't have a CW number on the bottom of it.

You have a great site, and thanks to you I have found a few cars to add
to my collection.  Thanks

David Peer

Hello my name is Jose.  I have been collecting movie and TV-related cars for some time now.  Until recently I have had them all in their packages without opening them.  I was looking through the net a couple months back and I found your site and I think it's a great way to display your collection the way you do, since I have mine in the closet.  I wanted to know if you keep any of your vehicles mint in package or if all the cars you purchase are open and displayed.   Also, if you know of any other sites you can direct me to with the same type of content.   Thank you.

Hola Jose!  From the start, when I began putting my collection together, my goal was to open them and put them in a display case.  I like the option of holding them in my hands (and occasionally sending them down a race track).  But when I see collectors (like Metro Privratsky) who display their cars in their original packaging, I get a little envious.  I love looking at the photos and artwork on the packages.  Although the majority of my collection has been opened, I have a select few displayed in their original package.  These include RC2's grey and black GMC van from The A-Team, HW Jurassic Park helicopter, Austin Power's Jumbo Jet, a full set of racecars from Days of Thunder, and the most valuable piece in my collection, Snowman's Semi-Truck from Smokey & the Bandit II (there are a few others).  To open or not to open?  That's a tough call.

Hi Joe, Really like the completeness of your site. My Favorite was your modified Greased Lightning car, I plan to do the same. Just wondering if "The Car" was on your list or did I just miss it?  Also do you sell? You should just sell the Grease car (to me for instance), and then you can start over with  a new one...just kidding.

Hey yea, I saw your price guide on the website, so I have downloaded it and I'm very happy. I am also shocked at how many American Graffiti cars there are and the extensive list of Fast and Furious. I just picked up the Brian's red pick up at my local hobby shop.
Maybe I'll take a Lincoln and try to modify it to represent "The Car" from the movie, shouldn't be too tough.  Glad to see your website is always changing.  Do you think you may some day put some links on your site for toy die-cast shows?  Just a thought.  I do like your site as is though. Great to visit it for the close ups of the cars and the cards/packages.  This helps a lot in my searching/buying and when you give your extensive reasons why you like certain molds/brands over other really helps as well. Because of you I have found Charawheels. Where have I been!!!?
See Ya - Oz
Don Janzen

Hi Don.  I'm stunned that no one has done a good 1:64 scale version of the cars from Grease.  Thinking about it makes my head hurt.  I decided to take a stab at customizing one of my own using a HW 1940 Ford Convertible.  It turned out okay, but I hope to give it another shot.  I've learned a lot about customizing since making that car.  Of course, it would save me a lot of time and trouble if some die-cast company would just do it for me.

As for The Car, I thought that RC2 was going to release it in 1:64 scale a while back.  It was solicited in the Previews Catalog and I ordered a case hoping to get one.  When the case arrived... NO MODIFIED LINCOLN!!  I was pretty disappointed.  I wish I knew what RC2 had in store for 1:64 scale TV and movie cars.  It seems like they're leaving up to Johnny Lightning to cover that area.

Finally, I don't think I'll be adding links for die-cast car shows.  They're pretty few and far between in my area.  The best one comes along once a year as part of Autorama.

Hello, my name is Jameson Campbell and I am trying to look for a movie for my dad.  He can't remember the name of it so I need your help.  It had a school bus in it.  It also had a black '71 Charger that had rust on it.  A bad guy was driving the charger.  Do you know what the name of it is?

Thanks, Jameson

Hi Jameson.
I'm drawing a blank on this one.  Doesn't ring a bell.  Can anyone out there provide any info on this movie?

UPDATE:  I've gotten several e-mails telling me the movie in question is the 1990 TV Movie Wheels of Terror starring Joanna Cassidy.  Here is a summary posted on IMDB:

This is a movie about a mother, Joanna Cassidy, and her daughter, Marcie Leeds who moves to Copper Valley, Arizona to get away from the city life of Los Angeles. A black driverless 1974 Dodge Charger appears out of no where terrorizing young school girls in the Copper Valley community. Later on in the movie, the sedan kidnaps the daughter right in front of her mother while driving her mini bus. The mother makes a desperate attempt to reclaim her daughter by chasing the black sedan through the rough Arizona desert terrain.

Thanks to those who sent e-mails.

Hi Joe,
I have recently setup a website dedicated to movie and TV model vechicles @
www.moviereplicars.net.  Any chance we can swap links to add on each others site?

Thanks
Ewan

Good luck with your site Ewan.  I plan to add a 1:18 section to my website as well.

Hi Joe,

I've been reading your site since Mattel acquired the Batman license, and I've found it to be very helpful and informative.  Thanks for your continued effort.

I wanted to let you know about the "Batman Begins Transporter" I found at TRU.  You can see a picture here:  http://home.netcom.com/~scottg10/BB_Transporter.jpg.  Feel free to use it on your site.

I also wanted to mention that a Superman vs. Luthor Hot Wheels set has started showing on Ebay.  It's on the same idea as all of the Batman VS Villains sets they've done.

Talk to you later,
Scott J. Gordon

That transporter is pretty sweet.  I've thought about picking it up.  I haven't added it to the Batman Begins gallery yet because it's not really from the movie, but I'll consider adding it.

If I see the Superman set in stores, I may pick that up as well.

Hi Joe,

Love the Bio.  Your an interesting guy.  It was well written.

Hey, I had a quick thought.  I was going to go through all your TV/Movie categories to see if I could spot anything new, and realized I didn't have time to go through them all.  I was wondering if you ever thought of adding a section, like some other sites, that is simply a "what's new" section.  It would show what you have added to the TV/Movie sections in the last so many months.  That way people could frequent this section occasionally to keep up with what you add, without having to regularly scan all the show names.  I do not know how difficult it would be, or if even of interest, but figured it couldn't hurt to mention the thought.

As always...love your site and thanks for all your hard work.

Best Regards,
Craig Mueller

Thanks for all of YOUR input and contributions to this site Craig.  Normally, if I add anything major to the galleries, I'll announce it on my home page as "news."  As I developed my checklist/price guide, I realized there were several things I had neglected to add to my galleries.  The biggest changes were made to the Batman galleries, especially in regard to boxed sets.  I promise you Craig, I'll announce any new changes.

Hello, I purchased the collectors guide. Is there going to be free updates?

- Timothy Ellis

Thanks for buying the Checklist/Price Guide Tim. And thanks goes out to everyone else who has bought one and sent along nice comments about it.  I'm not sure how often I'll be offering updated versions of the Guide.  More than likely, it'll be every few months.  I hope you understand when I tell you that it would be very difficult for me to send out free updates to everyone who has downloaded one.  I'll have to think about that one.

Your e-mails really make my day.  Please keep them coming.  Click on the e-mail link in the left column and I'll do my best to find the answer for you.
