Top 10 Car Tunes

1) The Batman Theme
by Neal Hefti

Let's start the list with one of the most recognizable TV theme songs ever, the theme from Batman.  Who doesn't picture themselves behind the wheel of the Batmobile when your hear Neal Hefti's menacing theme?  Atomic batteries to power!  Turbines to speed!  There's not a MOMENT TO LOSE!!!

2) James Bond Theme
by John Barry Seven Orchestra

Another instantly recognizable theme that makes me want to sneak around corners with my finger-gun pointed in the air.  When I hear this song, my Neon has pop-up machine guns, a smoke screen and an ejection seat.

3) Dukes of Hazzard Theme
by Waylon Jennings

Just a Good Ole Boy by Waylon Jennings flashes me back to sitting on the sofa with the family watching them Duke boys jumpin' ditches while gettin' chased by ol' Rosco P. Coltrane (Coo Coo Coo).  Other songs you may want to include on your mix CD are The General Lee by Johnny Cash and The Dukes Reunion Theme Song sung by John Schneider and Tom Wopat.  Man, I want my horn to play Dixie!!! Yeeeeee haaaawwwwwwwww!

4) East Bound & Down
by Jerry Reed

If you're running to the store to pick up a few cases of Coors Beer for the barbecue, you can pretend you're bootlegging them back home when you play this song from Smokey & The Bandit.  Oh wait, you forgot the Buffalo sauce?  Then play West Bound & Down and go back and get some.  You can also slow things down on your CD with The Bandit.  Nah, who wants to slow things down?

5) Knight Rider Theme
by Don Peake

An ominous, mysterious song that makes you feel like trouble is lurking ahead.  Uh oh, there's a train ahead.  What?  Your car is telling you to jump it?  Well, hit turbo boost and jump that sucker!  The bad guys are getting away!

6) Life is a Highway
by Rascal Flatts

Originally recorded by Tom Cochran, Rascal Flatts recorded their version for the Cars soundtrack.  It's difficult to hear the country version of this song and not imagine Lightning McQueen and friends in Radiator Springs.  Cars ranks as one of the all-time great car movies, and the soundtrack is worth picking up for that long road trip along Route 66.

7) Greased Lightnin'
by John Travolta

Why this car is automatic..... it's systematic..... it's hyyyyyyydromatic... why it's GREASED LIGHTNIN'!!!  I'm not even sure what that means, exactly, but it sure sounds cool.  Lots of car mumbo jumbo and dirty words will make you want to put on a leather jacket and run a comb through your hair before picking up that babe in a poodle skirt for a night at the drive-in.

8) Speed Racer Theme

Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer!  He's a demon on wheels.  He's a demon and he's gonna be chasin' after someone.  Play this song in your car's CD player and all of a sudden you're in the powerful Mach 5.  Trees?  No problem.  Whip out your buzz saws.  Road block?  That's what your jacks are for!  Run the other racers off the road and watch them explode in a ball of flames.  NO WAIT!  Never mind.  It's a soccer mom in her mini-van.

9) Magnum P.I./
Rockford Files Themes
by Mike Post

TV theme song genius Mike Post should definitely be in the credits of your mix CD.  What's cooler than pretending to be a badass P.I. behind the wheel of your badass Ferrari or Firebird Esprit chasing down bad guys and saving the girl?  At the moment, I can't think of anything.  Post is also responsible for themes from Tenspeed & Brown Shoe, Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, Hardcastle & McCormick, Riptide and NYPD Blue among others.

10) Foggy Mountain Breakdown
by Earl Scruggs

Smokey on your tail?  How about them pesky revenuers?  Well, get that extra boost you need to outrun them with some BANJO MUSIC!!!  This song was featured in the film Bonnie & Clyde (and I'm sure countless others).  I prefer the version that features Steve Martin on banjo.  Yes, THAT Steve Martin.  Dang cops.  Fire up the fiddle and let's go!

Other songs that didn't quite make the Top 10 but should be on your mix CD:  Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Dick Van Dyke, The Fall Guy Theme (Lee Majors sings!), Cannonball by Ray Stevens, Back in Time by Huey Lewis, The Green Hornet Theme,  Starsky & Hutch Theme by Theodore Shapiro (almost made the Top 10), C.Hi.P.s Theme, Herbie the Love Bug by Emeen Zarookian, Angela's Theme (theme from Taxi), The Munsters Theme, Miami Vice Theme, Speedway by Elvis Presley and Holiday Road by Lindsay Buckingham from the Vacation soundtrack.  Oh, and how about a little Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs from the American Graffiti soundtrack?
