Q&A

Let's kick off Q&A with these following questions:

Q: Where can I find the decals to create an exact replica of the Little Bastard? - Hilery Norman

A:  There are several die-cast replicas of James Dean's Porsche Spyder 550 in various scales, but I haven't found an exact replica in 1:64 scale.  Hot Wheels made a very nice 1:64 Porsche Spyder.  It would be fairly easy to create decals to turn it into Dean's car.  You can purchase laser printer decal paper at any hobby shop.  The font used on the numbers 130 and "Little Bastard" is Brush Script.  There are also two red stripes above the rear wheels.  After applying the decals, you may want to apply a clear coat because they can rub off fairly easily.  Look for photos of the car online for reference.  I plan on creating one for myself someday.  I'll post pics when I get around to it.

Q:  I wanted to find out more about these Wal-Mart exclusive Bond cars. Are these restaurants in all of the Wal-Mart stores ? How much do they cost ?   Best Regards,  Mike Lombard

A:  Johnny Lightning's exclusive James Bond cars are only available at Wal*Mart's Radio Grille Restaurants.  Unfortunately, not all Wal*Mart stores have these restaurants.  Some have a McDonald's restaurant instead and they don't have the cars.  I've found that different Radio Grille's have different policies.  At some locations, you have to buy a pretzel and frozen Icee for around 2 bucks to get a free Bond Car.  At other locations the car comes with the kid's meal.  I've found that most employees are willing to let you look through the boxes to get the cars you need.  Just keep in mind that the white Lotus is almost impossible to get.  They're appearing in one in a hundred boxes on average.

Q:  Was there or will there be a model of the great 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge from the film Two Lane Blacktop which starred Warren Oates as the driver.  The film was made in 1971 where he challenges  a 1955 Chevy to a race.  Many thanks your website is great.  - Mark Goodfellow

A:  Thanks for the compliment Mark.  As far as I know, the 1970 GTO from the film has not been made in any scale.  The following cars have been produced by ERTL:

1:18 Scale
1970 Plymouth Barracuda
1955 Chevy Hot Rod

1:64 Scale
 '69 Chevy Camaro
 '69 Dodge Daytona
'74 Plymouth Barracuda
 '55 Chevy
'69 Chevy Camaro (Model Kit)

Q: Mate, you may have been asked this question a million times but could you please tell me if and when ERTL is going to release an American Graffiti '56 T'Bird.  I noticed they have released some cars that were in the movie for less than 2 seconds, but no T'Bird.  Any info would be appreciated.

A:  So far ERTL hasn't produced the Thunderbird driven by Suzanne Somers in the film.  I'm not sure if it's on their to-do list.  The following is a list of American Graffiti cars produced by ERTL in 1:18 scale:

'51 Mercury Coupe
'62 Chevy Corvette
'58 Impala
'55 Chevy
'32 Ford Deuce Coupe
'56 Ford Pickup

You can check for updates at ERTL's official site:

Revell has produced a model kit of the Thunderbird in 1:25 scale and Johnny Lightning has produced the car in 1:64 scale.

Q:  Have I mentioned how awesome your site is? :)   It has really got me going with my 1:64 collection. Now I have to pick me up a nice display case for the wall. Do you recommend any in particular? I was thinking of getting one of the Johnny Lightning ones from Toys R Us. It appears to be expandable too.  Thanks,  Mark Sanders

A:  I started my collection with a really nice display case that held 24 cars.
It was a dark wood display case with a green felt background.
When the collection started to grow, I went with a case that held 32 cars.
It had a mirrored background with a plexiglass cover that slid up and down.
It's nice to have a covered case to keep the dust off of your cars.
When the collection continued to grow, I went with the display case I have
now.  It holds 70 cars, has a mirrored background and a plexiglass cover
that's hinged.
I bought all three of my display cases on eBay. It really depends on how
many cars you want to display.  Go to eBay's die-cast category and do a search for "display" and see what's available.
I don't think I'm going to go above 70 right now, although that may change.
I've seen display cases that hold 100 cars.  Maybe some day.
I had to put my Batmobiles in a seperate display.  I bought a Johnny
Lightning Showcase to display my Batmobiles because some were too long for
my regular display case.

Check back next month for a new Q&A.
