September 2005

Each month I go through the most recent e-mails I've received and pick a few to share with you.  I try to personally respond to every e-mail I receive, but I also post a few here in my Q&A column.

Hey Joe,

How's it going? I recently came upon this turquoise GTX similar to the one David Spade and Chris Farley rode in Tommy Boy.

It's a hardtop rather than convertible, and the back isn't jacked up as high, but the colors, wheels, and interior are a great match. It's probably as close as one can get to the one in the movie.

Take care, Metro

Good eye Metro.  At one point, the GTX from Tommy Boy was on a list of candidates for Johnny Lightning's Hollywood on Wheels series.  For some reason, the car never made the final lineup.  I wonder if this is JL's way of offering the car without the hassles of license fees.  Comparing it to the screen shot you provided, this car is a near-perfect match.  Even the wheels are very close.  Tommy Boy is one of my all-time favorite movies and I'm going to keep my eyes open for the Mopar 10-Car set that includes this GTX.

Hey,  it's Rob.  How have you been man?  Got 2 for you check these out:

Those are sweet Rob.  Thanks for the heads-up.  I especially like the Corvette!

Um…do you have any info on the show/movie The Wraith starring Charlie sheen?  Have there ever been any copies made of the turbo interceptor made by Dodge featured in the film

Thanks,
Toz

As cool as this car is from The Wraith, it's never been produced in die-cast form that I'm aware of.  And I don't think we'll be seeing it any time soon.  Not only would it require a new casting that would be difficult to re-use, the movie is pretty obscure.  I own it on DVD, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.  I'm expecting it to be pretty bad.

I have the same Star Car Matchbox car K.I.T.T.  If you look close at the pic on the package you will notice that the pic is backwards, a misprint.  The driver is on the left and the hood scoop is on the left as well.  Just a fun observation.

p.s.:   Loved the site,
Paul

I never noticed that error until you pointed it out Paul.  Maybe whoever was responsible is British!

Hi, Just wanted to say I love your website!! Can't let a week go by unless I check in.  I collect mostly 1:64 scale  T.V cars and  have a few 1:18.  One car I haven't seen at all on your website is probably my absolute favorite, next to the Batmobile, is the Man from U.N.C.L.E car.  I have the Corgi version of this but I was wondering,  does anybody have any plans on re-making this car?  I know it was only in a handful of episodes but the AMT model is very popular.  Also what's the word on a new series of Hollywood on Wheels from Johnny Lightning?  Thanks for any info you have, and keep up the good work!!

Tommy  D.

Actually, Tommy, I have an entire page dedicated to The Man from UNCLE.  Only Corgi and Playart have given us die-cast cars from the TV series, and the Piranha can only be found as a 1:64 scale Corgi Junior/Husky.  I agree with you.  I think the Piranha is one of the best-looking TV cars ever, but unfortunately, it is very unlikely any die-cast car company will revisit this classic TV series.  Personally, I would scoop up this baby in a heartbeat if RC2 offered it in 1:18 scale, but again, it's very unlikely this will happen.

I think that the movie The Transporter has such an awesome opening car chase scene that it should be in your top ten car movies of all time list.

Just a thought.
Charles

I thought The Transporter was a very entertaining movie with some spectacular car chases, but one of the Top Ten Best of all-time?  I don't think I'd agree with you there.  I am, however, looking forward to seeing the sequel.  I'll post my review when I get a chance to see it.

Hi Joe.....I checked out your website and it's great!  I especially enjoyed reading your commentaries on the 10 Worst...very funny.  I'll be sure to check the site periodically.

Keep up the good work!

Andrea

Thanks for the kind words Andrea.

Hi Joe,

It's Chris from Proton Charging - we back-and-forthed a year or so back about the Johnny Lightning Ecto-1/1a. I wanted to drop you a quick note to see if you'd heard anything about the 1/24th scale, hot-rod style Ecto;

http://www.protoncharging.com/ghostbusters/images/rc37167ecto.jpg

Other's in the series have been spotted (the General Lee, etc) but no sightings of the Ecto - rumour has it it's been cancelled. I thought if anyone would know for certain, you would.

Glad to see you're still at it - I've always dug your site.

Chris,
www.protoncharging.com

I've spotted some of the cars above at retail, and to be honest, they don't appeal to me.  I prefer realism over the cartoony-hot rod style.  I'm not sure how successful this line was and I don't know whether or not RC2/Joy Ride will follow up with future series.  As you can see above, RC2 has shown a protoype of the Ecto-1, but I've never seen it at retail or on eBay.   I'll ask my RC2 contact and post her response when I receive it.

Hall of Fame Drag Racer Tommy Ivo and I have exchanged a few e-mails since his induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.  Here is an excerpt from his e-mail:

I "really" liked that site of yours, that you sent me.  That's a WOW'er!!!  Speaking of that ---- would one of my four engine cars in 1/18 scale qualify for your movie car collection since it was in Bikini Beach?  AND -- do you have space to use it?  I would be glad to send you one "If it qualifies as I said"!!!  That collection of yours is no less than phenomenal!!!  I had no idea they made so many movie cars.  Can I pass the web site around?

Tommy added:

Yes it certainly is die cast --- and a "Jim Dandy" one at that!!!  GMP did it in 18th scale so they could get lots of detail on it, and that they did "in spades".  Here are a couple of pictures of it.  You have to use a magnifying glass on the real model to appreciate it.

That is a spectacular dragster and I bet the 1:18 scale die-cast is a wonder to behold.  It'll be a nice addition to any movie car collection or dragster collection.  Again, congratulations on your induction into the Hall of Fame and it was a pleasure meeting you.

Your e-mails really make my day.  Please keep them coming.  Click on the e-mail link in the left column and I'll do my best to find the answer for you.
