May/June 2005

Each month I go through the most recent e-mails I've received and pick a few to share with you.  I try to personally respond to every e-mail I receive, but I also post a few here in my Q&A column.

Looks like Sun Star is doing an 1/18 version of the pink  6 wheel-car from the Thunderbirds movie. This car is an actual  car (not just CGI) I read about it in Autoweek magazine.

Dj89sse@xxxxxx

Thanks for the heads-up.  I never saw this movie, but the car is pretty cool.  I, however, am partial to the original Fab1 from the classic TV show.

Hey again,
After some months of silence (but of course watching your page any day) I decided to contact u again ;)  Your page rocks and all those events are totally stunning...even if I can only read what fun u had. ;)

So, the reason I am writing is, I browsed your TV collectibles again. I clicked CHiPs
(I clicked 'em a thousand times already, like any other car I don't have)... now the day has come... I need these for my collection too, hehe.  So I tried eBay... without success.  Still some CHiPs items in, but no die-cast vehicles.  I wonder how old these toys are and if they are still available in shops (which I don't think).  Maybe u can help by answering these questions or tell me an internet shop which is still selling CHIPs items.

And for a reason I bought Friday the 13th Matchbox character car... now I want 'em all. But eBay doesn't have 'em all...now... so maybe u know another solution how to get all at once? Because its getting a little expensive to order each single one from the US. ;)

Also, I  just acquired the new JL Hollywood on Wheels series via german eBay for decent price.  It was still in original package and with awesome cars.  Sure the General Lee is a bit out of...whatever...its cool to have em. :)

p.s.  I got more than 300 film/cartoon cars now...great feeling...just because I
accidentally visited your site some years ago. ;) Thanks!

Thanks for reading,
Volker

Nice hearing from you again Volker.  First of all, I, too, have noticed it's getting more and more difficult to find vintage die-cast vehicles, including the vehicles from CHiPs.  They occasionally show up on eBay, but there's usually a frenzy of bidding, unless you're lucky enough to find a "Buy It Now" auction.  Unless you have a flea market or die-cast convention near you, eBay remains your best bet.  Be patient and be prepared to pay the price.  The same thing applies to Matchbox's Character Cars.  I once tried to bid on a complete set up for auction on eBay, but the price got way beyond my means.  You'll have to put this set together piece by piece, and hope the rare ones show up for auction.  Good luck!

Hey there, Joe!  Hope all is well with you!
A quick question: Where have you found the best place to get these?
(On-line or not...)

ERTL James Bond Goldfinger DB-5 1:18 die-cast
Mattel 1:18 Batmobile ('89 Keaton style)

Heck, I'm still trying to find a 1:64 and 1:18 Love Bug.  The search seems
endless ... Here in northern MN it's real hard to find some of these.  The Super
Wal-Mart has some, but never the ones I'm looking for.  Thanks, Joe!

My best,
Ernie

I guess I've been lucky.  I walked into a hobby store one day, hoping to find RC2's 1:18 scale KITT, but instead stumbled across the 1:18 Aston Martin DB5.  I've never seen KITT OR the DB5 in stores since.  The 1:18 Batmobile by Mattel was most commonly spotted at Toys R Us.  At one time, there seemed to be plenty to go around, now the supply has pretty much dried up.  Same thing applies to 1:18 Herbie.   At one time, there were plenty, now I never see them in stores.

As for the 1:64 scale Herbie, I don't think Johnny Lightning realized the demand that existed for this car when they got the rights to produce it.  When it was originally released, it was VERY tough to find.  And now, even though there are TWO in the new Hollywood on Wheels series, I have yet to see this series in stores (I got mine through hobby shops).  Hopefully, demand will be met and more will ship to major retail stores.

Dear Joe:

Okay, new subject.   This concerns the classic Beach Boys "Woody" station wagon.  Is there really any one definitive "Beach Boys" Woody, or will just any Woody do?

I'm currently tracking 4 different models on eBay (1 white w/surfboards on roof/, 2 black, 1 orange w/surfboards.)

I find myself drifting more to the black one: a V-8 Ford Packard---the same kind seen in "The Muppet Movie" and "The Mod Squad"---but I'm just not 100% sure.

Please respond soon.  The auction ends tomorrow.

I hope this helps.

Just surfin' around and found your site. Very cool.

I am wondering; how come there are no models or mention of the Leslie Special and Hannibal Twin Eight from the 1965 movie "The Great Race"?  I've been looking for years for a die-cast, resin kit, something of these classic cars but they seem to be overlooked. The closest I came was somebody made a paper model of the Hannibal 8. Your site showcases many great vehicles but again I see no mention of these two cars.

If you have any information please pass it along. Maybe throw them up on your voting for grins and see what happens.

Cheers -

- Todd

As far as I know, vehicles from the 1965 film The Great Race has never been made into die-cast or even plastic.  Doing an eBay search under Toys & Hobbies reveals nothing.  I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.  Brand new castings would have to be created to produce cars from this film, and I just don't think sales would justify the expense.  For those of you who are fans of the film, let your voice be heard.

Do you know where I can find any models from the film Convoy (i.e. Rubber Duck)?
I have been searching for years with no luck. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Robert Capener

As you can see in the above photo, ERTL produced a 1:64 scale version of Rubber Duck's tanker truck from the 1978 film Convoy.  It's pretty sweet.  A few years ago, I was lucky enough to nab one on eBay at a reasonable price, but I gave it to a friend.  Now it rarely comes up for auction on eBay, and when it does, it commands a hefty price tag.  There is also a model kit of Rubber Duck's cab.  Be patient and keep looking.

Robert responded to my e-mail with:

Thanks a lot for that.  I did see a model kit that someone from Australia was selling for £150 upwards on eBay about 2 weeks ago.  The worst thing is I had the truck which I bought in a toy shop in Blackpool, England when I was 13 (am 27 today) and I don't know if I lost it or it's still in my parents' attic.  If only I knew then what I know now.  I must have seen the film 100s of times.  Still never get bored.  Oh well,  I've probably got another 80 years left in me so I might get lucky and get one.

I hope to speak to you soon.
Rob

Joe,
We do this site... www.captainbadass.tv  and we are doing a comic strip spoofing Top Gun. Where CAPTAIN BADASS competes in a air show with one of the planes. I'm needing pictures from all angles of a Top Gun plane. And wanted to know if you might be able to take picture's of the Top Gun model plane from all angles and send this to us. I would be willing to give you a link or billboard on our site in exchange. Please let me know as soon as possible.

Steven Presley

Hi Steven,
These are the only pics I have of the Top Gun jet.  It was made by Matchbox as part of their Star Cars line, but I wouldn't exactly use these pics as reference.  Matchbox has never been known for accuracy when it comes to their die-cast entertainment vehicles.  I would think you'd be better off trying to get stills from the movie.

Hi Joe,
Is there any way of telling if my Challenger is a white lightning.
I understand that the wheels and interiors were white.
Is this true? Also what's it worth as I have it on eBay at the moment?

Wayne

Well, considering the Vanishing Point Challenger I own has GREY rims, then yes, you do indeed have a White Lightning.  Congratulations!  As for its value, it's difficult to say.  I don't collect White Lightnings, but taking into consideration how difficult it is to find HOW6 in stores, I'd say you have something special on your hands.

Hi Joe,

Today from Spain, I received in the mail Guisval's 1/64 version of Knight Rider (El Coche Fantastico).   I'm enclosing some photos, perhaps you would like to add them to the gallery.

Thanks,
Metro P.

Thanks for sharing, Metro.  I get a kick out of these foreign interpretations of American TV programs.  Gotta love that sticker of David Hasselhoff on the hood of the car!  Again, this website could never be as thorough as it is without the contributions of collectors like yourself.

Joe,  I really like the site, but the one thing that is missing from the site and die-casts is trucks.  I know that there are people who would love to see Hollywood’s trucks.  Who wouldn’t what to have the truck from Convoy, Movin'On, Smokey & the Bandit 1 & 2 or Maximum Overdrive, and many other truck movies that have been made?  How would we the go about getting companies to work on this?  Smokey & the Bandit:  Why have just the car and no truck?  The truck was as much part of the movie as the Trans Am.  Thanks for hearing what I have to say.

David In Milwaukee WI

I agree with you 100% David.  Above are some of the entertainment-related trucks that have been released over the years.  I would LOVE to see more TV and movie-related trucks hit the shelves.  ERTL released Snowman's truck from the SECOND Smokey & the Bandit film, not the first (there are noticeable differences.)  I think that's a glaring oversight.  I'd also like to see trucks from Maximum Overdrive and Duel.  I've sent an e-mail to RC2, and I suggest you do the same.  Visit their website at:

Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause by Lawrence Frascella and Al Weisel

Hi Joe:

I thought you might be interested in the new book I co-wrote, with Lawrence Frascella, called Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause, which is being published by Simon & Schuster in October 2005.  We have just put up a website about the book at www.livefastdieyoungbook.com, which we plan to expand once the book comes out with a lot of our research. The book includes a lot of new information about the "chickie run" sequence in the film and about hot-rod culture in the 1950s, car customizing, drag racing, etc, as well as some accounts of James Dean's racing and love of cars.  It would be great if we could exchange links. Let me know if you're interested.
Take care,
Al Weisel

Good luck with your endeavor Al!  I wish you the best.

Your e-mails really make my day.  Please keep them coming.  Click on the e-mail link in the left column and I'll do my best to find the answer for you.
