February 2005
Each month I go through the most recent e-mails I've
received and pick a few to share with you. I try to personally respond
to every e-mail I receive, but I also post a few here in my Q&A column.

Is there a die-cast for the Sanford &
Son truck that you know of?
Thanks, James
As far as I know, James, there is no officially licensed die-cast of the
Sanford & Son pickup truck in ANY scale. According to sources,
there were two different trucks used throughout the life of the TV series.
The first, and most famous, was a faded red '52 Ford Pickup. The
second was a '47 Mercury M-47 Pickup. The Mercury is on display
at Historic
Auto Attractions in Roscoe, Illinois (shown above). If you're
interested in doing your own custom version, you can find a 1:24 scale '52
Ford Pickup on eBay (pictured below).

Hey, Joe! Thought I'd pass along a link to a webpage I dedicated
to those Star Trek ships. I just can't get enough of these, and am
looking forward to the next batch with great anticipation...
Hope you like 'em!
See ya!

Hi Joe,
I want to share this:
Got this from a recent trip to Hong Kong. A genuine 1:43 die-cast 1976
Corgi Batcopter (see attached photo)
Btw, I need a Batman Animated and New Animated Series Batmobiles - 1/64
scale die-cast. Do you know anyone or you might have extras that I can
purchase.
Thanks,
Oliver
Great find Oliver! As for the animated Batmobiles,
they occasionally show up at toy shows or flea markets, but your best bet is
eBay. Unfortunately, the New Adventures of Batman Batmobile
doesn't show up that frequently on eBay, but be patient, you'll find it at a
reasonable cost.

Hello! I just love this site! We have
talked before. Soon as I get a camera, I intend to send pictures.
I would love to get an answer to this question. Can you tell me what
year Hot Wheels went to the current "hook" type hanging hole for the store
pegs? And would this be about the same time all company's did?
Thank You, John
Well John, I consider myself an expert on TV and movie
die-cast cars, but not the HISTORY of die-cast in general. For that, I
turned to the Hot Wheels forum over at the Hobby Talk Bulletin Board. Here
is the response I got to your Hot Wheels question from CTWLSMIKE:
Wow, one could probably write a pretty
thick book on this subject. But I'll try to summarize. Original redlines
from '67-73 were on a package somewhat wider and slightly taller than the
current cards. In the mid 70s the cards were switched to the size they are
today, those issued in what's commonly referred to as the "mainline" cars.
There have been many derivations of these cards with series such as Hot
Ones, Speed Fleets, Workhorses, Real Riders, Speed Demons, and on and on and
on.
The cards were switched to those commonly referred to as Blue Cards in the
late 80s when they started numbering them with the #1 Old Number 5. There
were many numbers skipped, but the numbering system stayed like this with
the highest number being #1121 in 1999. After that the mainline blue cards
were numbered within a year's issue (i.e. 2000-001 through 2000-2XX for
however many cars there were).
Of course, along the way there were other series of cars that had different
sized cards, like the Crack-ups and Flip-Outs. And if that weren't enough,
they did reissue some original castings on similar cards to original
redlines for their 25th anniversary. These cars are cool substitutes to
their original counterparts but without the cost. They are identified by a
"vintage collection" stamp on the card and base of the car.

Hi there Joe,
Have spoken to you before. Can you tell me if the Johnny
Lightning series is available in England? If not could you
send me a General Lee, Daisy's Plymouth, Daisy's Jeep and will pay
you via PayPal?
Thanks for your time,
Wayne Chandley
I have no idea if the Hollywood on Wheels series will
be available in England. I'll try to get that answer for you and
post it here. If it's NOT available there, I will be happy to pick
up the cars you need and send them to you. That's the LEAST I can do
for someone from the country that gave us BENNY HILL. (I just bought
Benny Hill: The Early, Naughty Years on DVD. The man
was a GENIUS!)

Hi
Joe,
My name is Steve Mason from Columbus, Ohio... Cooool site you have
there... I also have a site you might want to check out...
www.diecastfun.4t.com I've got a section on there about movie and
TV cars also... Those cars from Two-Lane Blacktop from racing
Champions are a joke... They don't even make the '55 or the GTO that
were the main cars in the movie... The only one I've seen in the movie
is the Cuda, for about 4 or 5 seconds of the movie... The one I would
like to see is a 1/64 Challenger from Vanishing Point... I do
have the real cars from the Two Lane Blacktop movie in 1/64, but
the catch is... I made them myself using Johnny Lightning cars... Check
them out...
Thanks,
Steve

Awesome customs Steve! Nice job. I had read someplace that
the '55 Chevy used in American Graffiti is the EXACT same car that
was used in Two-Lane Blacktop (painted over, of course, and with
some other minor modifications.) Johnny Lightning has the '55 Chevy
casting and RC2 has the license, so maybe we'll see this car as part of a
future Hollywood on Wheels series. As for the Challenger from
Vanishing Point, you GOT YOUR WISH, because it's included in Hollywood
on Wheels 6.
Thanks for the heads-up Roger!

Hi Joe,
Will you be adding a Dale Earnhardt 1/18 and 1/64 for your movie
collection?
Thanks again,
Dave.
Wow, that's a good question Dave.
Since the TV movie 3 aired on ESPN and was subsequently released on
DVD, do I add all of the Dale Earnhardt die-cast cars to my movie/TV
die-cast gallery? I'll have to think about that one. I'd
prefer to add officially licensed die-cast that is directly connected to
the movie. I guess I'll have to look into exactly how much Earnhardt
die-cast exists. If any Earnhardt fans can help me out on this,
please send me an e-mail. I caught bits and pieces of 3 on
ESPN and enjoyed what I saw. I thought Barry Pepper did a great job.
By the way, I met Barry Pepper when I was
an extra in the HBO film 61* (which was filmed in Detroit.)
He played Roger Maris (I was a reporter). Barry was a super nice guy
and it was a pleasure meeting him. I thought he was great in
Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile. He was kind
enough to pose for a photo with me during the filming of the movie in
2000:

Your e-mails really make my day. Please keep them coming.
Click on the e-mail link in the left column and I'll do my best to find
the answer for you.
